On Sat, January 7th, KIAC will host the first Family Coffee House & Open Mic Night of 2012. I know you’ve all had time to learn some songs over the holidays, so here is your chance to show them off…

Admission, as always, is by donation with all proceeds contributing to a local community group. Everyone is welcome to attend and/or perform, and for the record; this is the most welcoming audience you could ever expect, so feel free to try something new.

On Fri, January 20th, KIAC is honoured to welcome celebrated Winnipeg singer-songwriter Greg MacPherson to the Oddfellows Ballroom for a very special solo performance. Greg is fresh off the release of two fantastic albums in the last few years (and a Polaris Prize nomination), and starting his own record label that will release his own albums as well as albums from emerging Winnipeg artists.

Greg’s songs resonate with a timelessness reserved for true classics and are delivered with an emotive punch that has garnered comparisons to Billy Bragg, Joe Strummer, and Bruce Springsteen. On Sat, Jan 21st, Greg will be back at the Ballroom for a free songwriting workshop that everyone is welcome to attend.

Sat, February 4th is a busy day of guitar. Whitehorse-based classical guitar trio Partrita, which consists of well-respected musicians Hélène Beaulieu, Danette Readman,  and Nicholas Mah, will present an afternoon classical guitar workshop and evening public performance.

This workshop will feature a short demonstration from the trio of instructors, followed by three group sessions and a demonstration of what each group learned.

On Thurs, February 16th Frostbite Music Festival, the Dawson City Music Festival, and KIAC co-present Whitehorse live in concert. Yes, you heard me.

Whitehorse is the new band from Canadian roots music mainstays Luke Doucet & Melissa McClelland:

“Individually, Luke and Melissa have been recognized with awards and nominations from the Juno Awards, the Canadian Folk Music Awards, the Hamilton Music Awards, the Independent Music Awards and Polaris. Together, Luke and Melissa create music that cascades forth, rushing like currents fluid and electric. Word has come back from Whitehorse that the Sour Brides Theatre / Guild Society co-production of David Mamet’s smarmy comedy, Boston Marriage, has been garnering rave reviews in its consistently sold-out run.

Dawson City is lucky enough to have an opportunity to catch this show on Monday, November 28th at the Oddfellows Hall. Doors open and drinks are flowing at 7:30.

Visiting artist Daniel Barrow provided an appreciative Dawson City crowd with an enlightening and engaging artist talk that included excerpts from various performance pieces, including: an early overhead projection performance entitled, “Looking for Love In the Hall of Mirrors,” a slideshow featuring the artist’s set of trading cards detailing the fascinating and tumultuous personal lives of various eccentric minor celebrities, and a clip from his curatorial project / performance, “Winnipeg Babysitter,” featuring footage of the cable access musical duo, The Cosmopolitans, paired with text detailing the duo’s touching history together.

The following evening, Daniel performed his latest manual animation, “Every Time I See Your Picture I Cry.” A completely silent audience watched in awe as Daniel narrated the story of a character living on the margins of society attempting a grand artistic gesture that is ultimately destined to fail. All the while, Daniel masterfully created an aesthetically compelling visual experience one transparency at a time. Many audience members discussed the level of engagement that was necessary to appreciate the character’s musings, the narrative, the immersive aesthetic experience, and the artist’s novel approach to story-telling.

Daniel also visited Yukon School of Visual Arts students before heading back to Montreal.

On Sunday, November 13th at 7pm Daniel Barrow will present a free artist talk in the KIAC ODDfellows Ballroom

On Monday, November 14th at 7pm Daniel will perform his newest award winning “manual animation”:

Every Time I See Your Picture I Cry

Written, illustrated, and performed by Daniel Barrow, this  ”manual animation” combines overhead projection with video, music, and live narration to tell the story of a garbage man with a vision to create an independent phone book chronicling the lives of each person in his city. In the late hours of the night, he sifts through garbage, collecting personal information and then traces pictures of each citizen through the windows of their homes as they sleep. What he doesn’t yet realize is that a deranged killer is trailing him, murdering each citizen he includes in his book, thus rendering his cataloging efforts obsolete. The garbageman is a failed artist who fears becoming subject to the grip of something overwhelming. This animation traces his attempts to slow down and creatively reflect, in a process of coming to terms with his own self-loathing and fear.

He has performed at The Walker Art Center (Minneapolis), PS1 Contemporary Art Center (New York), The Museum of Contemporary Art (Los Angeles), The International Film Festival Rotterdam, The Portland Institute for Contemporary Art’s TBA festival, and the British Film Institute’s London Film Festival.
