“The Yukon Permanent Art Collection is exhibited in public buildings so that Yukoners and visitors can experience the breadth of visual art practised in Yukon,” Tourism and Culture Minister Elaine Taylor said. “The new acquisitions reflect how the artists drew inspiration from their surroundings to create eight exceptional works, each contributing to Yukon’s rich cultural legacy.”
The exhibition, entitled Capture, features work by both emerging and senior artists working in various media. Jessica Vellenga’s fabric work Klondike Bound, is an antique hand-embroidered garment listing the clothing recommended for women traveling to the Klondike during the gold rush.
“I’m thrilled that my art work has been selected as part of the Yukon Permanent Art Collection, where it will be exhibited and preserved,” Vellenga said. “This piece was inspired by the women of the North and I can’t think of a better home for it.”
Other new acquisitions include:
- Brian Walker, Directions – sculpture – bronze
- Justin Smith, Between Two Worlds – carving – wood
- Marten Berkman, Pillar of Light – photograph
- Janet Moore, Close to the Thirtymile – painting – acrylic on canvas
- Daphne Mennell, Stormy Wind Wiggle – painting – oil on canvas
- Evelyn Pollock, Fish – photographs (pictured above)
- Lillian Loponen – Whiteout – painting – acrylic on canvas
Capture is on display until the collection is rotated next spring.
